N. Korea's 'small hydropower' capacity more than doubles

https://www.boland-hydroturbine.com/ SEOUL, Feb. 27 (Yonhap) -- The capacity of small-sized hydropower generation facilities in North Korea more than doubled over the past three years, a United Nations report showed Thursday, as the country is struggling with chronic electricity shortages. According to the report by the U.N. Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), North Korea secured power generating capacity of 83.2 MW by using so-called small hydropower facilities last year. It was much higher than the 33 MW estimated in 2016. Small hydropower refers to power plants with a capacity of 10 MW or less. Building such power plants costs less and causes less of a harmful impact on the surrounding environment. North Korea has been promoting the construction of small hydropower plants to tackle chronic electricity shortages caused ...

WAPDA calls 2019 an “historic year” for Pakistan’s hydropower sector

https://www.boland-hydroturbine.com/ The Pakistan Water & Power Development Authority says 2019 was a historic year for the development of water and hydropower resources in Pakistan. Record generation of hydroelectricity was supplied to the National Grid, and construction work on the 800 MW Mohmand Dam project was initiated in May 2019. The hydropower stations owned and operated by WAPDA provided 34.678 billion units of electricity to the system in 2019. This is 6.321 billion units more compared with 2018 at 28.357 billion units. WAPDA says, “The optimal operation of three hydropower projects, completed last year in a phased manner, proved to be a good omen.” These projects alone generated 9.372 billion units cumulatively in 2019, with 4.741 billion units from the 1,410 MW Tarbela 4th Extension Hydrop...

Four hydropower projects to continue implementation in 2019-2020 FY

https://www.boland-hydroturbine.com/ The four hydropower projects—671-megawatt (MW) Shweli (3) hydropower project, 280-megawatt (MW) Upper Yehwa hydropower project, 111-megawatt (MW) Thahtay hydropower project and 51-megawatt (MW) Upper Kyaingtaung hydropower project—will continue implementations during 2019-2020 fiscal years, said a source from the Ministry of Electricity and Energy. The projects we will continue implementing during 2019-2020 FY include 622.38 miles of 66-KV power lines, 22 66-KV sub-power plants, 132-KV, 230-KV, 500-KV, 1488.15 miles of power lines, 25 sub-power plants, 23-megawatt  Myanaung natural gas-fired power plant, 152-megawatt Ale Paunglaung hydropower project, 671-megawatt (MW) Shweli (3) hydropower project, 280-megawatt (MW) Upper Yehwa yydropower project, 111-megawatt (MW) Thahtay hydropowe...

Large storage potential in future ice-free glacier basins

Global warming will cause substantial glacier retreat for the majority of the world’s glaciers over the next few decades. This will not only spell the end for some magnificent natural monuments, but also importantly affect the water cycle. In high- mountain regions, these ice masses act as reservoirs feeding water to large river systems, and balancing seasonal discharges. Without glaciers, rivers would carry considerably less water in summer, which would have noticeable consequences for water availability, energy production and agriculture in many regions of the world. Researchers had previously discussed the idea of compensating the shrinking storage function of glaciers with reservoirs (see Zukunftsblog – in German only). A group of glaciologists from ETH Zurich and the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is now again engaging in the discussion about the dwindling ice: in a study published in Nature, they investigate the global poten...

Water Turbine Design for Small Scale Hydro Energy

https://www.boland-hydroturbine.com/ Selecting the Best Type of Water Turbine Design Selecting the best type of water turbine design for your particular situation often depends on the amount of head and flow rate that is available at your particular location and whether it is at the side of a river or stream, or the water is to be channelled or piped directly to your location. Other factors include whether you want an enclosed “reaction turbine design” such as the Francis turbine or an open “impulse turbine design”, such as the Pelton turbine as well as the speed of rotation of your proposed electrical generator. By analysing all of these factors together you can get some indication of what type of  Water Turbine Design  may work best for your particular situation. Knowing the difference between ...

The Invention of Hydroelectricity

https://www.boland-hydroturbine.com Who Invented Hydroelectricity? Lester Allan Pelton was an American inventor who is recognised as one of the founding fathers of hydroelectric power due to his invention of the Pelton Wheel, which is also often referred to as the Pelton Turbine or Pelton Impulse Turbine. Born in Vermilion, Ohio on September 5, 1829, Pelton grew up in a rural setting working on the family farm and attending the local school. He would relocate to California in 1850 during the time of the gold rush where he would become both a carpenter and millwright. Pelton would make his “accidental” discovery sometime in the 1870’s before going on to invent the Pelton Wheel. Lester Allan Pelton later died on March 14, 1908 in Oakland, California and was buried at his family site in Vermilion, ...

Amazing!400-year-old Bible being protected by hydropower

https://www.boland-hydroturbine.com/ A “hugely important” Welsh bible which is more than 400 years old is being protected from damage with the help of hydropower, the National Trust said. The first bible translated into Welsh has been increasingly at risk of deterioration from flooding and damp at the 16th century farmhouse Ty Mawr Wybrnant, near Betws-y-Coed, Snowdonia, where it is on display. But now the Trust, which cares for the property, says it has found a sustainable solution by installing a “pico” or small scale hydroelectric turbine to use water from the nearby stream to help power the heating system to prevent damp. It means the bible is being protected by the very thing, water, that is also putting it at risk through increasingly heavy and persistent rainfall, flooding and damp, as the climate changes. The ...
