KP’s Four Hydropower Projects in Pakistan Delayed By Three Years

  Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s four 244.4 MW renewable and cheap electricity hydropower projects are stalled due to negligence of the Ministry of Energy (Power Division) and PESCO for the last three years. The projects are pending due to non-approval, notification, import certificates, and purchase agreement. Similarly, Pakhtunkhwa Energy and Development Organisation (PEDO) has an arrear of Rs7,147.604 million in electricity sales to the federal government. A reliable government source told this correspondent that the projects were delayed due to bureaucratic hurdles, which are hampering the production of cheap electricity, while Prime Minister Imran Khan is focusing on cheap hydropower generation in the country. Ongoing hydropower projects are also being affected due to non-payment of dues. Major overhaul planned for Queensland’s largest hydropower plant

  ueensland’s largest hydropower station, the 570MW Wivenhoe Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Station, will undergo a $14 million overhaul to ensure it continues to produce cleaner, cheaper energy for years to come. Major maintenance works will start at the Wivenhoe station this month, creating 100 jobs under the Palaszczuk Government’s COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan. The plant is owned by CleanCo Queensland. Rs97 Billion for New MW Hydropower in Nepal Approved

 T he Investment Board Nepal this week approved foreign investment worth Rs97 billion for two hydropower projects, the 285MW Tamor and 139.2MW Lower Manang on the Marsyangdi. India’s SJVN is also being issued a survey permit for a detailed feasibility study of the 679MW Lower Arun project in Sankhuwasabha. Likewise, the meeting directed the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation to improve the laws to address the ambiguity regarding the survey permission for the Tamor Reservoir Hydropower Project (756 MW). It also formed a committee to study and prepare a blueprint for the development and investment of the West Seti and SR-6 joint hydropower projects.

Tunnel Construction of 140MW Tanahun Hydropower Project in Nepal Completed

  Tunnel construction of 140MW Tanahun Hydropower Project in Nepal has been completed.The hydropower project is being built in Jhaputar of Rishing Rural Municipality, Tanahun.  According to project Chief Achyutbabu Ghimire, construction of 2.5-km access road from Byas Municipality, Chapaghat, to the project site has already been completed. "We are very glad to have completed this challenging task of tunnel road construction. Completion of these roads have now made it easier for us to start dam construction," said Ghimire.Further, Ghimire said they were able to complete a significant portion of the project as they continued the work even during the COVID crisis.Earlier, the project had suffered some early hiccups due to delay in selecting the contractor and then scrapping the existing contractor and selecting a new one. Hydropower Can Help States Afford to Meet Net-Zero Emissions Targets by 2050

  The Commonwealth of Massachusetts recently passed a climate hill that sets a target of net-zero emissions for the state by the year 2050. The bill is one of several successful legislative efforts in Northeastern states to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 80 to 100 percent by mid-century. Uzbekistan wraps up new hydropower plant on time despite pandemic

  Uzbekistan’s state hydropower producer and developer, Uzbekhydroenergo, announced on March 30 the commissioning of Zarchob Hydropower Plant (Zarchob small HPP-1) after a four-year construction project. Two major hydropower plants to be constructed in Salzburg and Carinthia of Austria

  On Wednesday, the chairman of Verbun, Austria’s largest electricity provider, Michael Strugl announced two major hydropower projects - the construction of the Limberg III in Kaprun, Salzburg and Reisseck II + in Carinthia. Iran, Azerbaijan Resume Construction of Joint Hydropower Plants

  The Iranian and Azerbaijani officials have agreed to move ahead with the construction of dams and hydropower plants on the border river of Araz, which were recently liberated from Armenia's occupation during the Second Karabakh War. Plans for the new plants, known as "Khudafarin" and "Qiz Qalasi" (meaning maiden tower in Azerbaijani), were approved during the third meeting of the technical working group of Iran and Azerbaijan. IRENA partners with IHA to advance hydropower development

  The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the International Hydropower Association (IHA) have collaborated to advance sustainable hydropower development across the world. Under the terms of the partnership, the two organisations will work together to accelerate the financing, development, and deployment of sustainable hydropower. IHA CEO Eddie Rich said: “While hydropower will continue to play an essential role in global electricity, hydropower’s flexibility and storage capabilities are also important to complement variable renewables such as wind and solar. Three Gorges Hydropower Station hits world record of electricity generation

  The Philippines’ Department of Energy (DOE) announced a tender for five geothermal projects and 17 hydropower projects which will be awarded in April. The DOE's plans include five geothermal projects and 17 hydropower projects with a total potential generation capacity of 150 MW. The five geothermal projects cover areas Daklan, Itogon, Putting Lupa, Maricaban island and Mt.Labo with totally 87 MW potential capacity, according to a DOE statement. All the 22 projects will be offered to qualified renewable energy developers deemed eligible based on the criteria set by the DOE. The PPA has enough technical information for preliminary reference by those interested in acquiring renewable energy development rights. The deadline to submit bid documents will be 15 February. Lao hydropower plant developer builds homes for flood victims

  VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN): Families who lost their homes during the catastrophic flood that hit Attapeu province in July 2018 are preparing to move into specially built houses. A total of 700 houses are being built by the developers of the Xe Pian-Xe Namnoy hydropower plant, which was the source of the accidental flood after a dam collapsed. Information about the new housing in Sanamxay district, which was devasted by the flood, was given to Vientiane Times on Friday (Dec 4) by officials from the Energy and Mines Department in Attapeu province. The United Nations is financing the construction of an additional 66 houses and Thailand is funding 35 others. Some families have already moved in after spending months in temporary accommodation. The houses are currently under construction in Dongbakmai hinkham, Hinlath, Donebokmai saengchanh and Samongmai pindong villages. China eyes 60 GW of hydropower on Tibet's Brahmaputra river

  China could build up to 60 gigawatts (GW) of hydropower capacity on a section of the Brahmaputra river, known as the Yarlung Tsangbo, which flows from Tibet into India and Bangladesh, Chinese state media reported on Monday, citing a senior executive. Yan Zhiyong, chairman of state-owned Power Construction Corporation of China, speaking at an industry conference, said that plans to dam the river were a "historic opportunity", and would not only help to meet the country's clean energy plans but would also strengthen water supply security.
