Colombia's renewables share rises to 82% in March

Colombia produced 81.57% of its power from clean and renewable energy sources in March, XM Compania de Expertos en Mercados, operator of the national interconnected system (SIN), said.

In February, the clean share in the total power production was 72.61%.

Clean power plants generated 159.51 GWh per day on average in March, up by 8.74% month-on-month, with large and small hydro driving 97.9% of the output. Hydropower plants (HPPs) benefited from the impact of the La Nina phenomenon throughout the month, XM said.

More production details are given in the table below:

Power production from fossil fuels was down by 34.87% compared to February.

Total electricity generation averaged 195.55 GWh per day, a decrease of 3.20% month-on-month which XM attributed to Holy Week festivities in March.

Bill Gates-led Fund Invests in Startup That Built a New Hydropower Turbine

https://www.boland-hydroturbine.com/ Hydropower—converting moving water into energy—is the single biggest source of clean power in the world, but relies on a 200-year-old technology that hasn't changed all that much. Natel Energy Inc., a California-based hydro power startup, has developed a new turbine that updates that technology, and now the company is raising $11 million in a funding round led by Schneider Electric Ventures and Breakthrough Energy Ventures, a fund helmed by Bill Gates. The turbine lowers the construction cost of power plants, because it requires less cement and steel. It also allows for safer passage for fish, which has become a stringent environmental regulation for these types of projects in both the U.S. and Europe. Natel Energy was started by two engineers and siblings, Gia a...

Something You May Want To Know About Hydropower Dams Published on November 13, 2019

https://www.boland-hydroturbine.com   A  hydroelectric dam  is one of the major components of a hydroelectric facility. A dam is a large, man-made structure built to contain some body of water. In addition to construction for the purpose of producing hydroelectric power, dams are created to control river flow and regulate flooding In some rivers, small scale dams known as weirs are built to control and measure water flow. Dams fall into the category of retaining structures, or structures that are built to create large standing bodies of water known as reserviors These reservoirs can be used for irrigation, electrical generation, or water supply. These structures are built on top of riverbeds and hold back water, raising the water level. Dikes can be built along with the dam to increase the dams effectiv...

Types of Hydropower Plants

There are three types of hydropower facilities: impoundment, diversion, and pumped storage. Some hydropower plants use dams and some do not. The images below show both types of hydropower plants. MPOUNDMENT The most common type of hydroelectric power plant is an impoundment facility. An impoundment facility, typically a large hydropower system, uses a dam to store river water in a reservoir. Water released from the reservoir flows through a turbine, spinning it, which in turn activates a generator to produce electricity. The water may be released either to meet changing electricity needs or to maintain a constant reservoir level.                                                www....
